WATERLOO — The Waterloo Container Company recently was recognized by M.A. Silva, a leading industry supplier of cork stoppers, with a Green Certificate for its contributions toward retaining 7,854 tons of CO2 and preserving 7,451 cork oak trees over the past decade of conducted business.
The company bases these metrics on studies by Price Waterhouse and ECOBILAN.
“Working with M.A. Silva is a seamless and valued partnership,” said Kate Matthews, closure specialist at Waterloo Container. “We made a deliberate decision to move most of our cork business to M.A. Silva as they are the leading manufacturer of premium corks for North American markets. Their dedication to the environment, quality and unwavering customer support aligned with our own corporate values and operational focus.”
Natural cork is a 100% natural plant tissue extracted from oak trees without harming the normal development of the species or damaging the trees. The natural sealing and oxygenation properties are valued for wine evolution; thus, this sustainable product is rich with history in the winemaking industry.
“Waterloo Container, a proven expert in packaging material with over 40 years of experience, is one of the most important partnerships that M.A. Silva Corks has had over our two decades of doing business together,” said Gustavo Beltran, vice president of operations at M.A. Silva. “Not only do we share interest in the longevity and sustainability of the wine industry as packaging leaders, but we share cultural, systemic, and environmental values that have allowed us to grow into close business and personal partners.”
He said the two companies “continue to be in alignment with our goals to bring the highest quality packaging to our valued customers, while instilling sustainable business and environmental policies. We look forward to continuing our strategic partnership and growing together for years to come.”
Bill Lutz, president of Waterloo Container said he was pleased.
“It feels great to be a part of something bigger than yourself,” he said. “Being recognized for our contributions to the protection and retention of sixty acres of forest area is very meaningful to us. We are grateful to be able to work with industry sustainability leaders like M.A. Silva. Our partnership with them has allowed us to grow our business while providing quality packaging supplies to our customers and promoting products with positive environmental impact.”
