Choosing the Right Closure

Choosing the proper closure can make or break your project’s look, taste and success. Let’s hear what some of the leading closure providers say about their products and how each can help you achieve the desired results:

Amcor on the Original STELVIN® Closure:

The STELVIN® closure uses specific liners that respect the ageing process. In addition to the two commonly available liners for aluminium closures: Saranex™ & Saran™Tin, Amcor offers additional four lines, the STELVIN® Inside range, which offer differing oxygen permeability. Liners are highly complex and play a pivotal role in aluminium closures for wine. They guarantee absence of cork taint, ensure consistency from one bottle to another and secure the preservation of aromas, flavours and freshness as well as controlled OTR, which is critical to the wine ageing process. All the films used in the STELVIN® Inside  range of liners are produced by Amcor and are PVDC-free. TheSTELVIN® Inside liners give winemakers greater choice in oxygen transfer rates, to help craft and perfect their wine.’

Nomacorc on the benefits of synthetic corks:

Our years of experience with winemakers combined with fundamental research into oxygen management in wine resulted in the need for wine closures that provide solutions for a vast array of issues facing winemakers.  Our products help them to more consistently deliver the unique aroma, flavor, color, and structure they intend.  Nomacorc Select Series products incorporate the latest advances in manufacturing materials and methodology resulting in an appearance and feel that is virtually indistinguishable from natural cork.  These closures are backed by the Nomacorc Winemaker Promise, a commitment of consistent oxygen control performance, quality assurance and closures free of TCA.

M.A. Silva on the Benefits of Using Natural Cork Stoppers:

Natural cork stoppers can be used on wines intended for either immediate release or for wines intended for long-term cellaring.  Research has shown that wine bottles closed with cork age more consistently and develop the richness and suppleness that age can bring. The wine achieves that sweet spot of ideal wine development, neither causing reduction as many of the screwcaps can nor causing premature oxidation as synthetics do. Cork-finished wines are also preferred by consumers. Their choice echoes a perception of quality and the luxurious feel of a cork being pulled out of a wine bottle. Since cork is biodegradable and recyclable, its use is consistent with sustainable vineyard and winemaking practices. Many winemakers who used screwcaps or synthetics to avoid TCA (cork taint) are returning to cork because the cork industry has made major improvements during the last decade, especially in reduction of TCA which is down to virtually nothing.
